The Curriculum

Lifestyle Practices + Tools of the Yoga Tradition

Yoga encompasses much more than just physical postures. It is a profound system of practices and tools that has evolved over thousands of years, serving as a pathway to awaken and engage fully in our lives. It is both a lifestyle and an anchor that allows us to navigate our relationships with the world around us. At BYC Yoga School, we recognize the significance of these aspects, dedicating approximately half of our curriculum to provide you with the necessary tools to embrace the yogic lifestyle. This section of the program will guide you in fostering self-care through yoga, delve into the depths of pranayama and meditation practices, and unlock the transformative power of holistic well-being.

Technical Teaching Skills + Practicum

This section of the curriculum is thoughtfully crafted to empower you with the technical skills required to step confidently into the role of a yoga teacher. Our classes follow a workshop-style format, providing hands-on experiences that build the necessary foundation for teaching yoga effectively, preparing students to lead Vinyasa Flow and Hatha Alignment classes, two of our signature class styles at BYC. These immersions will culminate with trainees showcasing their growth through teaching live classes to a supportive audience, including friends, family, and the public. This invaluable opportunity allows you to apply your newfound knowledge and skills in a real-world setting.

"Doing my 200 YTT at BYC was the best choice I could have made. The community they have created is like no other and with the focus on honoring the sacred roots of yoga as well as the different identities represented in the room, they definitely knocked it out of the park on how to do it right. They even have a section on holding a trauma informed environment which surprisingly isn’t the norm for TT yet. There is truly no other program that is as dynamic at this one.  If you are on the fence about it, just do it. You won’t regret it and chances are it will change your life. "

— Lindsey H.

"The YTT program at Bellingham Yoga Collective was incredibly transformational. Beyond the physical asana practice, we learned about the other limbs of the yoga tradition, meditation, Sanskrit, and more. What's more is the community of people learning alongside each other, of which I've been gifted some lifelong friendships! I'm thrilled to be working as a yoga instructor now while still feeling supported by BYC's continued mentorship opportunity."

— Felicia D.

What People Are Saying

"My experience in the 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training at Bellingham Yoga Collective was so much more rewarding than I could have ever expected. The community, the space, and the teachers made me feel so safe and free to explore myself and my practice. I gained so much knowledge about many aspects of the practice, and I felt that the layout of the program and the depth of the topics was very well thought out. The experience was truly life changing and I could not be more thankful. I would recommend it to anyone who is thinking about teaching, as well as to anyone who wants to explore more of themselves and what yoga means to them!"

 FAQs

  • Students enrolled in our program typically spend 1-3 hours each week completing non-contact hours, towards the goal of graduating. These hours typically include homework assignments that build upon topics and train skills covered during training modules, reading 1-2 books throughout the program, and attending yoga classes at the studio.

  • There is no asana that you MUST do in order to become a yoga teacher. It matters far more your level of sincere interest in the practice of yoga, which includes far more than asana! You are free and encouraged to explore asana throughout this training in a way that meets you in your unique body, mind and heart, and that changes day by day. Keep in mind this training is geared toward vinyasa and hatha flow styles of practice. Our teachers are skilled at providing options for all levels to make the practice more accessible.

  • Anyone who requests via email can set up a payment plan for their enrollment. Payment plans can be unique to each individual and what works best for their financial circumstances. Typically, a set amount is paid each month. The only rule we have is the program must be paid for in full by graduation. To start a payment plan, email program directors here

  • You can expect each day of training to begin with an embodied practice that leads into the subject matter for that day. Our instructors and the subject matter we cover throughout training are diverse, so you can expect each day of training to unfold in a unique and enriching way. Within that you can expect opportunities to move, breathe, learn, reflect, apply methods, and train new skills and capacities.

  • BYC is happy to provide mats, blocks, straps, and bolsters for all participants of the training. We encourage students to also have these items at home so they can practice using them when not at the studio. In addition, students are required to acquire a handful of required texts.

  • Yes! All students enrolled in our training receive 30 free classes to use during the duration of training and if all used up can purchase any additional classes at 50% off regular pricing during the duration of the program.

  • After graduating from this training you gain access to teaching community classes at the studio on a rotational basis with other graduates from your cohort. Your access to these classes is an opportunity for you to further refine your skills at sequencing and cueing and to develop your voice as a teacher.

  • We will work with each student on a case by case basis to make sure everyone who is committed to their training graduates the program. In general, this is our more detailed makeup policy:

Zooming in when you’re sick: There may be occasions when you can’t make it to the studio for training because you are sick and may be able to attend via zoom at the teacher’s discretion. Zoom attendance is not guaranteed. It is important to note that this training is not an online training and the quality of training experience in person cannot be replicated through zoom attendance. We discourage students from relying on zoom, but reserve it as an option.

1-10 Contact hours missed: If you are absent from a scheduled module, you will email the instructor directly and ask them for a makeup assignment. To compensate instructors for their time creating, reviewing and offering feedback on makeup assignments, a $45 makeup assignment fee is paid directly to the instructor. You also have the option to coordinate a 1:1 session with your instructor for content hours you would prefer to makeup in person. Private lesson rates vary but average around $80 per hour. Typically one missed module can be covered within 1-2 hours with a trainer.

11+ Contact hours missed: If you miss more than 10 contact hours, additional makeup assignments are insufficient for completing required contact hours of the program. Once 10 contact hours have been missed and made up via a makeup assignment, additional missed hours must be made up during 1:1 private sessions with the instructor. Private lesson rates vary but average around $80 per hour. Typically one missed module can be covered within 1-2 hours with a trainer.

  • Should circumstances arise that interfere with your ability to participate in the YTT program, you have the option to re-enroll and pick up where you left off during the next season of BYC’s YTT program. Tuition fees can be applied toward a future program, plus a $295 re-enrollment fee.

  • Please make sure you are fully committed to participating in this program before you submit payment. All payments are final. No refunds will be issued and there are no exceptions. Thank you for your understanding as so much time, heart and resources are put into creating, promoting and offering this type of programming.
